Learning to play guitar is well worth the time and effort. Of course, one has to figure out where to start. A bit of knowledge about the components of a guitar and the overall concept of songs is a good place to start. After that, you are going to need a guitar to learn on. In this article, we look at the type of guitar you should buy and why.

The first thing to understand is quality equates to price. Would you buy a Ferrari for a teenager learning to drive? Of course, not. Why? Because they are bound to thrash the thing and that is a huge waste of money. The same lesson can be applied to your first guitar. It is going to take a beating. You want something with a nice sound, but don’t want to spend a bundle. You can buy something nice when you get the hang of things.

So, how do you go about buying a solid starter guitar? The answer is actually not all that simple. No beginner really knows what they are doing, so the best first step is often to get help. Salesmen in music stores are like salesmen anywhere, so avoid them. Instead, give some thought to whether anybody you know plays. If you know someone, they can go to the store with your and make a recommendation. Actually, they’ll often have a guitar they will just give you!

What if you don’t know anyone? Then you are going to have to rely on some independent third party source. I’m as credible as anyone, so let me make some suggestions. The Martin LX1 is a good choice. Why? It is a ¾ size guitar, relatively cheap and Martin is an excellent brand. The smaller size is particularly helpful when learning scales and such until you become coordinated. You’ll pay between 0 and 0. You might check on Craiglist or eBay for used ones that are cheaper.

The Yamaha FG700S is another solid selection. It is a full size acoustic guitar and is pretty much the classic acoustic guitar you probably picture when the term is mentioned. This is not a top end guitar in my opinion, but it will give you solid performance for the price. You can pick them up new for 0 to 0 or, again, try to find used ones for much less.

Purchasing your first guitar can be a bit stressful, but don’t let it be. You just want something basic that sounds alright. Whatever you do, don’t spend a bundle because your playing will be more likely to make cats run away than groupies flock to you!

It seems a little backwards, but the acoustic bass guitar was not created until quite a few years after the electric bass guitar. The reasoning was that if there could be an electric bass guitar, why couldn’t there be an acoustic bass guitar? The acoustic bass guitar would be better suited for playing alongside the acoustic guitar, just as the electric bass guitar would be more suited to playing alongside the electric guitar. One might question why the acoustic bass guitar was not created sooner; the answer to this could easily be that there just wasn’t any real need for it before.

Like the acoustic guitar, the acoustic bass guitar is made with a hollow body instead of a solid one and is a little larger in size. Some of these will have frets, just like the acoustic guitar, but some don’t have them and it usually only has four strings, though there are some that have more strings. It is lower, so it can be difficult to hear. This is why they will often have to be played while using pickups, this way it can be heard above the other instruments it is being played with.

The pickups are what amplify the sound of the acoustic bass guitar. The acoustic bass guitar was first created in the 1960s and has been in use ever since. It may not exactly be growing fast in popularity, but it does suit a purpose and is used when it is most appropriate. In much of modern music, the electric guitar and the electric bass are more often used, but some genres of music still call for the acoustic guitars. It is possibly in these genres where the acoustic bass guitar will find more use. It may be a younger instrument, but there is still a lot of room for the acoustic bass guitar. The sound is sometimes preferred over the electric bass and is one that is being picked up more and more.

The acoustic bass guitar is not often the first choice of young and new musicians, but it is one that a few might pick up later on, because it can be very useful. Again, the genre of music and its demands will often determine whether the instrument will be used or not, but personal choice will also determine this. New music is being written all the time for all genres and in this new music are more parts for the acoustic bass guitar to play.

As music continues to change and more is written, the acoustic bass guitar will probably continue to find more parts to play. There are many people who prefer the warmer and more natural sound of the acoustic guitar and will make use of the acoustic bass. The electric bass can be too strong when played with acoustic and this is why the acoustic bass guitar was created in the first place. It was definitely a worthwhile creation that will continue to be used for a long time.

For a beginning guitarist, the difference between and acoustic and an electric guitar may not appear to be so obvious. I mean, they both have six strings and frets right, so why should you have to choose?

Well, the main difference between the two instruments is that making your decision will set the course for whatever style of music and career you may engage in from then on. Here are some detailed differences between acoustic and electric guitars.

1. There’s a difference in playing precision needed.

With electric guitars, due to the distortion and effects available, the amount of precision to make a guitar riff sound good is less. When playing on an acoustic guitar, the tones are very pure and mistakes can be heard much easier. Acoustic guitars are good to start with since they allow the player to know what skills and talents need to be improved upon.

2. Obviously, they’re made of different materials.

With acoustic guitars, the instrument is usually made up of mostly wood. There might be a plastic back depending on the model, but the amount of electronics used is minimal or non-existent.

For electric guitars, the materials used can be wood, metal, and quite a few electronic pieces installed throughout. Either way, you should keep some consistent maintenance on the instrument you choose.

3. The craftsmanship of the instrument varies.

Personally, I believe that in order to make an instrument that requires a very delicate and powerful natural reverberation like an acoustic guitar, a certain amount of audio physics and engineering is required. For that reason, I believe the acoustic needs a better craftsman to produce, whereas electric guitars can be poorly made but output decent tones due to the accompanying equipment and accessories.

4. One is slightly more difficult to play chords over the other.

Certain electric guitars are made to be played very easy and fast. The frets are lower and the strings are placed very close to the guitar neck.

However, acoustic guitars are known to really “whip your fingers into shape” with how much effort needs to be used for pressing down chords. I’m not saying it’s unbearable, but there’s definitely a difference between the two guitars.

5. Playing by yourself for a crowd can either be enjoyable or somewhat of a nuisance.

If you’ve gone to an open mic night and heard someone playing an acoustic guitar, you may have thought of it as decent or quite enjoyable. Oppositely, if you heard someone in the same place playing an electric guitar by him or herself, you may have thought it to be very annoying.

Acoustic guitars are more desirable to hear for solo musicians over electric guitars any day.

6. There’s a difference in the amount of equipment you’ll need to perform.

Sure, electric guitars can really rock, but you also need an amp, some cables, and any pedals that you desire to alter your guitar tone. With acoustic guitars, you need the guitar, a pick, and maybe a tuner and you’ll be set.

7. Each guitar is best for different genres.

Of course you can play any genre you want on either instrument, but the truth of the matter is that one will be better than the other. Metal or hardcore is best played on the electric guitar, while folk and classical can be heard differently on the acoustic.

I’m sure that there are tons of other differences to these two instruments that I haven’t attempted to cover, but these should probably give a beginner some sort of direction on where to go. Whichever guitar you decide to begin with, promise yourself that you’ll try the opposition eventually to understand the full circle of music that you can be experiencing.

Whatever you are buying a guitar for yourself or for somebody else, purchasing the right guitar can be an overwhelming experience with the vast chooses and varieties on the market. Buying a guitar can still be a huge amount of fun, so do not let this discourage you!

When trying to find the best guitar, whatever what is your situation, you have to consider 4 main factors.

1. Tone

It’s a very important factor.The main components that shape the overall tone of an electric guitar is the following:

Body wood

Neck wood

Pickup type and placement

Bridge type

Gauge of the strings

You must try different amps and control settings to see what each guitar has to offer.

2. Playability(feel)

It doesn’t matter how beautiful it sounds, how great it looks, or how much you paid for it.When you are playing it the guitar must feel comfortable. If it did not feel right, you wouldn’t want to play it for very long.In order to get good result you know that you will have to spend a long time practicing.So, I strongly recommend buying a guitar that is handy for the size of your hands. Here is what to look for:

Neck width at the nut- Your fingers will tell you if it is too narrow if they are tripping over themselves during chord changes. For soloing I recommend wider necks. This can vary from 1 3/4″ to 2.

Fret size-This is four common sizes: standard, thin, medium jumbo, and jumbo.When you playing, this will alter how much your fingers rub against the wood of the fretboard.

Neck thickness and carve shape-Whenplaying chords around the first few frets you want to have one that fills your hand well.

Scale length-that’s representthe vibrating length of the string.The shorter the length, the closer the frets will be to each other.

3. Your Style

Guitarists incline to see their instrument as a continuation of their persona and want to design their personal style with its color and shape.But the way a guitar looks does not always depict the tone that it will produce. So, if at first view, a particular guitar does not show like something you would appreciate, just give it a try. It might wonder you and open your eyes to new possibilities.

4. The Budget

First, you must decide how much you want to spend.If playing guitar is not something that you that you will want to stick with- probably not more than a few hundred.It’s very important to find the lowest price.A good strategy is to find the lowest price online and then go to a local music shop and parley using that price. You can get a good price because the vendor knows that you can buy online.

It is always a good idea to do some research about the different types of electric guitars and the different styles that they are available in. Depending on the different features the prices of these instruments can vary greatly. This is why you should carefully inspect the different parts of the electric guitar to be sure that you are placing your money in a right instrument that will stay with you for years to come.

They can be played with out amplification around small groups just like a regular acoustic guitar, but for performances, they can also be plugged into an amp. These kinds of guitars give a different kind of sound than the traditional electrics because of their design; they do sound more natural and are great when amplified for accompanying music if you want to play folk or acoustic rock style music.

Guitar Playing Basics

Learning to play the guitar can be fun although it can seem quite a daunting task to begin with. I first picked up a guitar when I was about 13. That was many, many years ago now and it was a wonderful feeling.

I couldn’t get much out of it but it was still fun.

Since then I have taught many people to play and I have enjoyed every minute of it. The last person I taught was my son. He was an outstanding student and his band eventually played the Arena, at the NEC in Birmingham, Uk in the National Youth Rock Band Festival.

So, if you are just starting or thinking of starting, maybe I could give you just a few very simple pointers to help you make a successful start to your new hobby.

Firstly we should consider the type of guitar and particularly the neck width and the strings.

The most challenging part of learning to play is being able to get enough pressure with your fingers on the fretboard to hold the strings down enough to get a clear note, rather than a buzzing, twanging sound.

Apart from practise, one of the keys is having a guitar with a narrow neck, plus lightweight strings.

So often I see a person trying to learn on a guitar with quite a broad neck and with heavy gauge strings. In that case you need very strong fingers and a broad grip with long fingers. Get yourself a guitar that you can comfortanly get your hand around.

It is worth spending some time trying a few out and getting a ‘feel’ for them. A guitar is rather like a good pair of shoes – it should feel comfortable. Never mind what it looks like. Comfort is crucial. It should feel ok and not awkward.

Don’t worry about trying out several in a guitar shop. It is expected and in fact, it is part of the culture of buying a guitar. Also, don’t worry about price. An expensive guitar is no guarantee that it will be the right one for you.

I have found Yamaha to be a good accoustic manufacturer. They have a lovely, strong, mellow sound and a good action (the way in which the strings press against the fretboard). Also, the strings should be as close to the fretboard as possible, which is usually the case with Yamaha.

The lightweight, soft feel of nylon strings on a classical guitar are often good for a beginner, especially girls or people with short fingers.

Next, you have to learn to get a few notes out of your guitar. At this stage, don’t worry about musical competence. Just keep trying until you get clear notes from your guitar.

And then there is practise. You have to play as often as possible. When I learned, I probably practised about 3-4 hours daily and at first, the tips of my fingers hurt like mad but after a while, the skin hardened and the discomfort went away.

Chords should be simple. Start with G, E, C and D. Then go on to Em and Am and then you will have the chords that you need for most things you want to play.
