All You Need To Know About A Bass Guitar

The bass guitar is a bass stringed instrument played with the fingers either by plucking, slapping, popping, or tapping or using a pick. The bass is similar in appearance and construction like an electric guitar, but with a larger body, a longer neck and scale length, and usually four strings tuned, one octave lower in pitch than the four lower strings of a guitar.

Materials used for making a bass guitar

The bodies of these special instruments are typically made of wood although other materials such as graphite have also been used. The most common type of wood used for the body is alder, for the neck is maple, and for the fret board is rosewood, though a wide variety of woods may be used to make the body.

Other regularly used woods include mahogany, maple, ash, and poplar for bodies, mahogany for necks, and ebony for fret boards. The choice of body material and shape of these guitars can have a significant impact on the timbre of the completed instrument as well as on aesthetic considerations. Other design options include finishes, such as lacquer, wax and oil along with flat and carved designs. Bass guitar necks, which are longer than regular electric guitar necks, are generally made of maple.

A brief history

In the 1930s, inventor Paul Tutmarc from Seattle, Washington, developed a guitar style electric bass instrument that was fretted and designed to be held and played horizontally. Unfortunately, Tutmarc inventions never caught the public imagination, and little further development of the instrument took place until the 1950s.

In the 1950s, Leo Fender developed the first mass produced electric bass. In the 1950s and 1960s, the term Fender bass was widely used to describe the bass guitars, because of early popularity of Fender in the market for mass produced bass guitars.

Different components of the bass guitar

Frets and fretless bass

Frets are a raised metal strips inserted into the fingerboard that extend across the full width of the neck. On a fretted bass, the frets divide the fingerboard into semitone divisions. The original Fender basses had 20 frets. Fretless basses have a distinct sound, because the absence of frets means that the strings must be pressed down directly onto the wood of the fingerboard.

Strings and tuning

The standard design for the bass guitar has four strings, tuned E, A, D and G, with the original frequency of the E string set at about 41 Hz, making the tuning of all four strings the same as that of the double bass. This tuning is also the same as the standard tuning on the lower four strings on a 6 string guitar, only an octave lower.

Pickups

Most electric basses use magnetic pickups. The vibrations of the instrument metal strings within the magnetic field of the permanent magnets in magnetic pickups produce small variations in the magnetic flux threading the coils of the pickups.

Amplification and effects

The electric bass is always connected to an amplifier for live performances. Electric bass guitarists use either a combo amplifier, which combines an amplifier and a speaker in a single cabinet, or an amplifier and a separate speaker cabinet.

White Fender Stratocasters and White Harley Davidsons

Exactly what do these two historically unique world changing products have in common? Lots if you want a biased opinion.

My only passion is not just playing the guitar until my hands hurt or my family and dog. Oh Man, I left out my deep passion for the greatest sporting franchise in the history of sports, The Washington Redskins NFL. This is life my friends.

Yup, I’m a biker from the age of five (Not A Clubber). My dad let me mess around a build some of the oddest and unsafe two wheeled vehicles ever. What a nut! I had a great childhood. My whole life has been pretty darn good. I’m very mechanically adept, I can do surgery, of-course I give discounts because I don’t have a medical license!

Enough of that. I’m a purest. That being said, As Fender Guitars changed the world of music, with the Stratocaster vibe having been copied over and over, the real deal is only guitar for me. It’s my vibe. With minor exception, all of my guitar influences play a Fender Stratocaster or Telecaster.

Even Jimmy Page played a Tele on occasion. You know Buddy Guy started all this high performance string bending blues stuff that is so addictive. You should know who Buddy Guy is. He is a living legend, still giving regular concerts, even into his early seventies. He plays a Custom Shop Stratocaster too!

Everyone knows Harley Davidson is the original and still the only American motorcycle company left. Born in 1903, they have endured the test of time and still can’t make enough bikes for all in desire. Harley is one brilliant, out of the box thinking company. Every other brand of bike has struggled over the years to be like a Harley. Particularly in looks and sound.

My theory on Harley wanna be bikes and bikers is that they really want a Harley but can’t afford it. Ask anyone riding a copy of a H.D. about their bike. Inevitably they might expound on the virtues of their bike and why it is better than a Harley. That is O.K. What happens if you asked them what they would own if their bike cost as much as a Harley. A Harley of course!

Take a look at a beautiful White American Stratocaster with chrome hardware and take a look at a beautiful White Harley Davidson and its chrome and stainless hardware. If you can’t see and feel the vibe, then your hopeless. You need to get some emotions and a little voodoochild and rub it on you.

Both products represent true American icons. They define what our country can be proud of and wreak of the glory each company has donated to society. Playing a Strat arouses my emotions and brings out my best vibe. Just looking at a White Clapton Strat gives me an internal feeling of ” that is me”. Your guitar is a personal extension of yourself.

White Harley’s have the same effect on me. I can hear one a mile away, sorta like I can pick up on a Jimi Hendrix song in a confusing over noisy area. One more thing about Harley’s. Lots of folks think they are to slow. Most HD bikes can go plenty fast. The beauty of a Harley is that it turns going slow into an art-form!

Talking about two of my favorite subjects can get out of hand and may never end. I look forward to a better America in the near future. Enjoy.

The Electric guitar hasn’t been around nearly as long as the Acoustic and Classical guitars. In fact, the Electric guitar was created just 70 years ago (the 1930s) by Adolph Rickenbacker. Since that time, the Electric guitar has greatly evolved to the where it is today. In this article, we’ll go over the history of the Electric guitar.

The History

Guitars, or similar instruments, have been around for thousands of years. The Electric guitar was first manufactured in the 1930s by Rickenbacker. Original Electric guitars used tungsten pickups. Pickups basically convert the vibration of the strings into electrical current, which is then fed into the amplifier to produce the sound.

The very earliest Electric guitars featured smaller soundholes in the body. These guitars are known as semi-hollow body Electric guitars and still are somewhat popular today, mainly due to the fact that they are flexible guitars.

However, with the use of pickups, it was possible to create guitars without soundholes (like the Acoustic and Classical guitars have) that still had the ability to be heard, if plugged into amplifiers. These guitars are called solid body Electric guitars.

The Electric guitar’s popularity began to increase during the Big Band era of the ’30s and 40s. Due to the loudness of the brass sections in jazz orchestras, it was necessary to have guitars that could be heard above the sections. Electric guitars, with the ability to be plugged into amplifiers, filled this void.

The Electric guitar that is most prevalent today is the solid body Electric guitar. The solid body guitar was created by musician and inventor Les Paul in 1941. It is a guitar made of solid wood with no soundholes. The original solid body guitar created by Paul was very plain-it was a simple rectangular block of wood connected to a neck with six steel strings. Les Paul’s original solid body guitar shape has, of course, changed from the original rectangular shape to the more rounded shape Les Paul guitars have today.

During the 1950s, Gibson introduced Les Paul’s invention to the world. The Gibson Les Paul, as it was and still is called, quickly became a very popular Electric guitar. It has remained the most popular guitar for 50 years.

Around the same period of time, another inventor named Leo Fender came up with a solid body Electric guitar of his own. In the late 1940s, Fender introduced the Fender Broadcaster Electric guitar. The Broadcaster, which was renamed the Stratocaster, was officially introduced to the public in 1954. The Strat, as it is now known, was a very different guitar in comparison to the Les Paul. It had a different shape, different hardware and was significantly lighter. Fender’s Stratocaster Electric guitar is the second most popular guitar in the world, second to only the Les Paul.

Over the years, other companies, such as Ibanez, Jackson, Paul Reed Smith, ESP and Yamaha have all produced solid body Electric guitars of their own. However, most Electric guitars still feature the familiar shape of a Les Paul or Strat guitar.
